Amended tax returns cannot be e-filed. You must mail them in. When filing an amended tax return, the typical response time has historically been 6-8 weeks. With the recent first time homebuyer tax credit, the IRS is getting backed up.
The amended returns are now being turned around in 12-16 weeks. We have done many of these returns since April of 2009. I have even noticed that e-filed returns have been getting delayed this year. For the first time ever, refunds for returns e-filed in 2009 for tax year 2008 have been delayed in some instances by 1-2 weeks.
If you e-filed, and your refund is late, there are two things you can do. You can go onto the IRS website and follow the links for “Where Is My Refund,” or you can pick up a good book to read while on hold and give them a call at 1-800-829-1040.
