We get this question somewhat frequently. The answer is no. For a married joint (MFJ) tax return, the IRS sends all letters to both partis, as the tax liability is joint liability. Just pay it one time, and if you pay by check, list the primary filer’s SSN in the memo. The IRS system is not very sophisticated, so it may not get posted to the correct account if you list the spouse’s SSN.
If you do not list an SSN, they may just deposit the check and not apply it to your account. In this case, you would have to respond to the follow-up bills with proof of payment. This can sometimes take 6 months or more to get resolved.
